When the things are machines that talk to each other, the IoT is called Industrial IoT (IIoT). GE estimates $15 Trillion increase in global GDP with Industrial IoT over the next 20 years. IIoT means connected semi-autonomous vehicles, smart factories leading a new industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0.
Industrial IoT systems are safety-critical and real-time. Safety-critical systems are systems that in the case of failure can endanger human life or the environment, or may lead to a large financial loss. In a real-time system, the “correctness of the system behavior depends not only on the logical results of the computations but also on the physical instant when these results are produced”.
